Google aims to help local web professionals

KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 20, 2012): Google Malaysia Sdn Bhd, which is launching its Google Certification Programme (GCP) challenge for AdWords – its search engine marketing platform starting from Nov 26 to Dec 23, aims to help web professionals improve their theory and practical application of Google Adwords, said its small medium business marketing manager Deon Moh.

According to SME Corp Malaysia, there are over 700,000 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Malaysia, of which only 100,000 SMEs do business using a website.

Of the 100,000 SMEs, only 3% to 4% are actively using AdWords, said Moh.

"SME business is something that Google looks at seriously. Online advertising is pretty new in many countries. We realise that there is a need to build the ecosystem. There are lots of ways to go about doing it," he said here yesterday.

"You can go directly to end advertisers or work with lots of partners and spread the awareness of advertisement to your existing base."

On GCP, Moh said: "When they pass the required exams to become individually qualified, they will receive a certificate verifying their achievement. They will also have an individual profile page shareable with interested parties."

As this qualification indicates an achievement of a standard of knowledge, it has value on a resume or otherwise used for marketable skills as an account manager.

He said the GCP challenge is only open to local agencies and digital consultancies, so company websites along with individual scores must be submitted.

Google Malaysia is committed to recognising and rewarding local agencies and digital consultancies looking to increase the number of GCP qualified individuals in their midst, he said, adding that those interested can visit www.google.com.my/ads/getcertified/ which will go live from 12pm today.

Moh said existing GCP-qualified challenge individuals whose GCP qualification expires before Jan 1 2013, are also welcome to join the GCP challenge.

"The certification carries weight and get recognised globally and give yourself and your company an edge by signing up for the challenge."
