SMEs asked to enhance businesses with ICT

KUCHING: Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have been asked to adopt and keep abreast with information communication technology (ICT) development to further enhance their businesses.

Sarawak Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) president Datuk Abang Abdul Karim Tun Openg said ICT development has reached a level where it is a vital tool for the business community.

“ICT is a phenomenon which develops quite fast. To be successful in business, one needs to keep abreast with the development of ICT,” Abang Karim told a press conference held to announce TM SME Bizfest 2013 on June 18 at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK).

He said the event aimed to promote SME development in the state and voiced his hope for the active participation of SMEs and business associations.

“This festival is not only a business event but also a corporate social responsibility (CSR) in terms of giving insight into the business world, hence helping to create entrepreneurs. The event will help the business community to understand the need to adopt ICT to strengthen their businesses,” he said.

Meanwhile, Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) SME executive vice-president Azizi A Hadi said some 500,000 or 80 per cent of the 640,000 active SMEs in the country have already subscribed to TM’s various services.

From this figure, 320,00 are using broadband and other ICT services.

With 33,000 active SMEs, Sarawak is one of five states with the highest number of SME establishments.

“We do not expect the SME BizFest to yield immediate results. However, this event is a platform to share information, knowledge and success stories by SMEs. We believe that follow up actions from the event are very important,” said Azizi.

“We have already seen a few success stories from last year, with these companies now becoming ambassadors to promote e-commerce on a nationwide tour.”

TM SME Bizfest 2013 is endorsed by SME Corp Malaysia, with participating partners such as Mircosoft, Naza, Lelong.my, RSH Malaysia and KTM Bikes Malaysia.

It will also be held in Selangor and Johor, targeting some 10,000 SME participants.
