Matrade To Assist 30 Local Companies Expand In Japan
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 21 (Bernama) -- Malaysia External Trade Development Corp (Matrade) is assisting 30 local companies to expand their business into Japan next year through its collaboration with AEON Co (M) Bhd.

Its Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Dzulkifli Mahmud said Matrade would tap into AEON's platform as a major retailer in Japan to market Malaysian halal products and services in the country.

"We are targeting 30 companies involve in food products to enter the Japanese market, including those who provide ready-to-eat and tropical fruits to the Japanese market," he told reporters after attending a briefing on export opportunities in Japan here Monday.

AEON Executive Director of Corporate Financing and Investor Relations Poh Ying Loo was present.

AEON has more than 5,000 outlets in Japan.

Dzulkifli said to date, six Malaysian food and beverage companies had already established their presence in Japan through the collaboration.

The demand for halal products and services is gaining momentum in Japan as Japan prepares for the Tokyo Olympics 2020 to cater to the needs of Muslim athletes, officials and tourists, he added.

Dzulkifli said Japan relied heavily on imported foods as it imported 60 per cent of its food supply.

"We must see the potential of halal market in Japan as it opens opportunities for Malaysian companies, especially small and medium enterprises," he said.

In 2014, Malaysia exports of processed food to Japan stood at RM620.3 million, an increase 32.7 per cent from the previous year.

Dzulkifli said the collaboration is expected to help boost Malaysia's export of products and services to Japan.
